if one lie could save someones soul would you lie?
Answers: 6 Views: 2070 Rating: 2 Posted: 13 years ago

By lying to try to help someone else, does that make your sole worse off, or better off because you are trying to help save someone else? I'm not religious, but the question got me wondering which it would be. Is a lie to help another a bad thing?

After all, when you wife asks you how you feel about seeing a movie called, "Terms of Endearment" for the thirty-seventh time, and you know its her favorite movie in the world - ever, and if you tell her the truth she will get upset thinking you think her taste in movies are terrible, is it bad to lie and sit there on the sofa, holding her in her arms while she bawls her eyes out, or is it better to piss her off and tell the truth?

In other words, is a white lie that might save a soul the same thing as a big lie that has nothing to do with saving a soul?

Does life start at conception or birth?
Answers: 24 Views: 3666 Rating: 10 Posted: 13 years ago

Interesting outlook and argument, Colleen. I would say life while life may begin with a fertilized embryo implanted in the body, human life from a legal standpoint should begin when that life form can exist outside the womb on its own, even if that means with artificial help like an incubator, breathing and feeding tubes, etc. Currently that would be between 22 and 25 weeks post conception. But that time period is getting earlier and earlier too while life fertilized in a dish is being grown later and later too. Eventually, there may be no need to even implant a fertilized egg. At that point, friendindeed may be correct from my point of view too.

Is it o.k. for police to pepper spray an eight year old?
Answers: 12 Views: 2593 Rating: 0 Posted: 13 years ago

Anytime a person's life is in danger, or if a person is threatening the life of another, the police must use whatever minimal means they can to control the situation. In this case, while I was obviously not part of the police inquest, if the article portrayed the situation realistically, I would say the police tried to first diffuse the situation, but resorted to pepper spray after failing other means. In this case, the child held a spear (long piece of wood with a pointed end), which could have been considered a deadly weapon. The fact that they resorted to a relatively non-violent act to subdue the child, seemed reasonable.

So the short answer is, yes if by not doing so could or would cause the injury to either the 8 year old, or to others, and it was the least offensive way to arrest the situation from escalating.

Keep in mind, pepper spray is potentially deadly to anyone with respiratory problems. For that reason, every police officer goest through training as to when it it appropriate to use.

What happens when earth shifts on axis?
Answers: 5 Views: 1314 Rating: 2 Posted: 13 years ago

Nope. The Earth is constantly shifting and swinging on its axis. The tilt of the Earth, currently about 23.5 degrees off the pole, has been moving for as long as there has been an Earth and moon. In fact, Polaris, the North Star will not be the North Star forever, but will move further and further from that spot as time progresses. Now, if we get hit by a comet or another really big asteroid, then nothing would matter because we would all be dead anyway. But if you did survive, then the world might be so far off its axis that the weather patterns would change. You can read more about this on the NASA.gov and there used to be a learning link about this very subject on NOAA.gov too. Not sure if it still there, but you can search for it on those two sites and probably find information on it. A third site that might have additional information is USGS.gov
