Pictures of the site users
Answers: 9 Views: 1717 Rating: 4 Posted: 13 years ago

With biometric image programs, it is possible to take a picture off a site, and do a world wide web search to find out personal information about you that you may not want public. Pictures on sites like this are dangerous because once you put down your opinion, it will always be available for HR staff to find. And believe me, it is not that hard to get all kinds of information about people, even when just having a single picture that shows a face. So if you have a picture of yourself here, and your friends have you on their face book account, and it shows you doing something dumb, like drinking and getting drunk, and you are supposed to be getting a job teaching middle school... I think you can connect the dots yourself.

You may have your picture on line, but I try not to for those and other reasons. Call me a security freak, but I know what is possible today, and what might be possible soon. I want to make those risks as small as possible.

Make him comfortable and be there for him. Drowning in one's fluids is a terrible way to go. I have seen it way to often in the last twenty years. Unfortunately, there is only so much doctors can do. Don't be angry at them for what they cannot do; be thankful for what you can - and then do it. As I said, make him as comfortable as you can and be there for him. You don't have to talk or anything else, but being there and taking the cues from what he needs is best. Also make sure you keep in contact with Hospice Care. They can help you, if you will let them.

whats more "interesting" the question or the answers?
Answers: 14 Views: 2529 Rating: 5 Posted: 13 years ago

Many people believer their is only one real answer for every question - theirs! I look at it this way, if I knew it all, I would be the God people are worshipping too. Once in a while, someone writes something I can get my teeth into and really appreciate. It is those answers that I look for. So while many of the questions are interesting, the way people answer, argue, and discuss the issues are even more interesting to me, the most interesting answers are which I had not seen coming, but that really makes a statement that makes a difference in how I look at either lots of things, or a specific question.

Yes, basic geometry. The taller one will be casting a longer shadow to begin with. You can use the idea of similar triangles to think about it. As the sun sets, the taller shadow will get longer and longer, compared to the shorter one. But either way, the shadows and triangles will be congruent to one another.

What were the Christian crusades? aka "The Crusades"...
Answers: 11 Views: 4415 Rating: 3 Posted: 13 years ago

Although Leeroy is mostly right, I would argue "History states the expanding Muslim empire and their treatment of others was the immediate cause." is not correct because "History" states nothing. Individual historians have made that argument, but History is not a person, or a group of people, and is a dangerous statement in itself. Too many people have used that phrase and as a Historian, it just turns my ear! No offense, just sounding off.

As a Historian, I was also concerned about the idea of an expanding Muslim culture being blamed for the Crusades when it should be mentioned that before Isabella and Ferdinand kicked out the Jews and Moors, everyone including the Catholics lived together in peace in Spain.

As far as the Spanish Inquisition, the Church only went after Christians and Morisco's who claimed to be Christian, but were secretly still practicing Muslims. It had no jurisdiction over anyone who was not claiming to be Christian, contrary to popular literature and movies.

So to put it bluntly, Crusades were a "Just War" against non-believers who needed to be saved from their own beliefs, because that is what Christians did - they saved souls.

As far as the Inquisition, it was used as an investigative practice designed to once again save a soul. If that person asked for forgiveness and did not go back on his word, then the inquisition did its job. Interestingly enough, the inquisitors actually understood human mental conditions and sought to help people who were clinically insane. Others, they tried to reteach and to convince. Only those who refused, or were repeat offenders were put to death. One of the best monographs on that subject is a case study called, "Mad for God." It did a pretty good job of explaining how the Inquisitors did their job, and how the Inquisition worked over all.

As for the Crusades, check out the monograph, "The History of Christianity."

Well its time to close this one. Evidently, no one would want to bring anything back from the past.

HISTORY QUESTION
Answers: 1 Views: 1862 Rating: 0 Posted: 13 years ago

Books or documents? The best documents include the fines, punishments, judges, and the people who brought court cases. Interestingly enough, those documents do not describe any judge ever asking the crowed who they should release. It just was not done in the Roman Empire by judges who lived and died by the rules of law. There are many documents from this time period to research, and many on-line. But I'd start with university press monographs because they are put up for peer review. Read those books and pay attention to the footnotes and endnotes, and then look for those documents on-line so you can judge for yourself after you have read at least five reputable monographs.

Fot those that don't know, a monograph is not a novel, and it is not a text book, it is an in depth study about an event, person, or idea that has been reviewed by experts in the field and then printed by university presses or other presses that are scholarly. But generally, you can be assured given two books, the one printed by reputable, scholarly presses is probably going to be a good book read.

After you read those five modern books, then look for the original documents because you will have a far better understanding what you are looking for and why. I'm doing that right now with Philip II of Spain. The only difference is I've read seventeen books on Philip and am only now beginning to read the Spanish and English texts. Why so many? Because he wrote over 100,000 documents in his life time and I was looking for information about one very specific event and I wanted to find out what other scholars had already found before I jumped in.

After the earthquake in Haiti why haven't we heard anything about there recovery
Answers: 4 Views: 1471 Rating: 0 Posted: 13 years ago

Poorly. Last I heard, cholera, a water born disease, and fear of other epidemics, forced the doctors without boarder out of the country. I have not heard if they have returned. Haiti, the first free Black nation in the western hemisphere has never had the support of "White" countries. Why would we start now? Its on the back news burner because of all the other disasters and wars and insurrections.

Oh, but heres some good news about Haiti: With the population dying at an alarming rate because of disease, starvation, poor water and the lack of shelter, whenever a major hurricane comes next, the unemployment issue will no longer be an issue because the death rate will be so great that the survivors will have plenty of jobs - morticians, construction, burning the bodies because there wont be enough cemetery space, road building, cemetery building, etc.

My suggestion, give to the American Red Cross, whatever you can afford. They'll get the money and supplies and hope to the places its needed most - including Haiti.

should I leave my husband?
Answers: 11 Views: 1854 Rating: 0 Posted: 13 years ago

Yes, absolutely. Leave him immediately and get on with your life - never look back. Be free! Be lonely! Be single! Be by yourself! Eat dinner alone! Be sure to get a good pillow to snuggle with! Be concerned about diseases! But never ever worry about what life could have been because you deserve a real life! Happy with another person? How could that ever be a realistic goal? Get out while you can!

medical question
Answers: 2 Views: 568 Rating: 0 Posted: 13 years ago

matheneyg is correct. To put it simply, benign means non threatening. It just sits there and grows in one place. Normally, it can be removed or irradiated in place and is, if you have to have either, the one to have. The malignant is the one which grows, spreads, and hides in other places, making it as difficult to kill as a dandelion with a really good root system. In order to get rid of the malignant tumor, doctors are normally much more aggressive, taking more tissue, using chemo in addition to radiation, and also using surgical techniques when called for. Its like having a bad case of root worm in a farmer's corn field - have to treat the entire field, the neighbors fields too, if you want to make sure they don't resurface somewhere else.
