First Run the Disk Help Application. (Should be in the Utility Folder inside the Applications Folder) and Run Repair Permissions in it. Even run it a few times if you never did it before.
Run Mac janitor ( http://personalpages.tds.net/~brian_hill… ) It runs the cleanup procedures that normally only run during the nighttime. (Mac OS X = Unix. Unix does his 'housecleaning' during nighttime, but if your computer is off it never does)
