Yes, they do get infections usually do to backed up dirt or ear mites. You should know exactly what is causing the ear to be the way it is before you try to treat it. If it's just backed up dirt an ear flush might be enough. You can buy ear flush at your local pet store. If mites, there is medication you can buy at your local pet store but if it's an infection, only a vet can help. You might have to put off a need you can live without to be sure your dog can be treated. Think of when you have an eat ache and how bad it hurts. Your dog may be in that kind of pain but doesn't have the voice to tell you. NEVER PUT ANYTHING DOWN YOUR DOGS EAR CANAL to try and clean it out. You can puncture their ear drum. Use only drops in the ear or an ear flush.

thankyou for the advice, unfortunately we don't have a weekend vet. around our area. do you know if we can give liguid tylenol to make her more comfortable?

Your dog might be fine with just some extra love and maybe a moist heat pack held to her ear to comfort the pain. Dogs respond well to extra love and cuddles when they do not feel well.
