    why does it lightning before it thunders

    You see lightning before you hear thunder because light travels faster than sound.
    If a storm is overhead the lightning and thunder are almost simultaneous, but the further the storm the greater the difference.
    Lightening is the discharge of electricity and thunder is the air rushing back into the space in the air caused by lightening spliting the air.

    No lightening no thunder.
