      After you see a lightning strike, start counting one mississippi, two mississippi, etc., and whatever count you end on when you hear thunder, that's how many miles away the lightning was.

                I learned that every second that passes after a lightning is equal to 350m of distance. So, if thunder follows, say, 3 seconds after the lightning, you have about 1km distance.
