Petticoat is the English word for a woman's underskirt. Crinoline is the same garment but the American word. Both are usually 'wide' and full and may include hoops to make a dress stand out from the legs. Not in much fashion these days except for formal ballroom gowns or square dancing. A very short version is popular amongst Goth girls or Cosplay girls. The multi-layered or 'fluffy' sort is very feminine.

My sister used to put plain geletin in the rinse water to make her many skirts crinkle when she walked. Also, they stood way out and looked grand. By the time I was of age to wear them nobody else wore them and I have been waiting for years to make my move.
