You must be present when the auction closes. At the very last minute if you are losing you put in a high bid that will override the other bids. You must be willing to pay this bid if it goes right to the limit, so don't bid $100 if you can't afford to pay it. I've won lots of stuff this way, but I wanted it very, very badly and I had the money to back up the bid.
