At some point in time it won't surprise me if the American Dollar will be worthless. There is a lot of banter going on about whether or not there will eventually be only one monetary system worldwide. Some people are for it, others (obviously) are not. This will remain a topic of discussion amongst all the world leaders until all systems are about to be worthless and they will be forced to do something.
When Nixon and the Federal Reserve took us off the gold and silver standard, it was determined that the GDP would govern dollar value. It was also determined, because of inflation, that the dollar would be completely devalued by 2018, thereby making it worthless. There wasn't an alternate plan developed, which is one reason why we need to get rid of the FED.

    Great answer FF.
The Australian dollar is at its` highest against the US dollar, it was not long ago our dollar was worth only 70c to US$ now we are over parity at A$1.07 to US4. This has meant a huge drop in prices for imported goods but a equaly large increase in export costs.
