    During the Second war some swimming pools in sydney were still full of water but they had drums of magnesium under the water as it is highly volatile when in contact with the air.

    Magnesium is what you see, or you used too, burning as tracers as in bullets.The pupose of tracers is what it says tracer. The person firing can trace the flight of the projectile at night and aim accordingly.
