The first hand cannon appeared during the 1260 Battle of Ain Jalut, between the Mamluks and Mongols in Middle East. made in China.

When I was in the Australian Artillery we were told the first "cannon" was like a large wooden tube strapped with steel bands for strength and was called a Bombard. We were told it would hurl a lump of stone up to a mile.

The name Bombard obviously is where we get to bombard something or someone.

The first non commissioned rank in the Artillery is a Bombarder and is/was second in command of the weapon. The lowest rank is Gunner.

I can't find anything about the chained cannon ball. I will continue my research. However, wikipedia claims that the invention of the cannon, driven by gunpowder, was first developed in China
