With computers these days, I am surprised travel agencies still exist. Myself, I just don't believe in paying someone else for something I can freely look up. A lot of information can be gained simply by looking up the chamber of commerce at the destination you intend to go to.

Well in Australia they do not do this BUT, they do charge in many instances a "single supplement charge" but it is not double.
If you think on it, to clean up a room with one or two people is much the same cost to the establishment so if you have two people you can obviously charge less per person.

As an addendum to the above it is not the Travel Agent that sets the price it is the business owner of the resort, train trip, flight etc that sets the price and the travel agent gets a commission on bookings made by them.
Travel agents earn commissions, these commissions are generally paid by the airlines and hotels that they book flights and rooms with. They are allowed to add in fees because the commissions are usually low. If you find that a travel agent is charging what you believe to be too much, you should seek out another travel agent and compare the prices. If you still aren't happy with the results, book your own flights and rooms and that should solve the issue.
