That could be lots of problems, You didn't say if it was auto or manual.
Could be simply fluid, could be synchronizers, could be linkage -- It's auto? then its electronics, that is another can o' worms.
If its auto, i believe its a daimler tranny, they had many problems with that.
Your best bet is just get it towed to the dealer and cross your fingers..
