    What would cause a small window unit air conditioner to sound like water is in the fan when it runs?

    Wrong angle on the unit. Water is collecting inside the air conditioner. Drop the back and the water will run out.
    Ed shank is on the track. It sounds like water for a very good reason" it is water.

    The humidity condencess and normaly drains out the back via a outlet hole if this is blocked it causes the water level to rise and the fan will cause the noise.

    Good old General Electric in their one piece aircons had a "fling ring" that revolved with the fan and would fling any water up into the breeze from the fan and spray it out the back.
