The Old city is considered to be a highly toured area, mainly because its the center of the 3 religions: Judaism, Christianity and Islam. Many old Sacred places to the 3 religions are located there: The western Wall, Church of the Holy Sepulcher and Al Aqsa Mosque. The new city in Jerusalem is the Periphery of Jerusalem and its where most of the citizens of Jerusalem live.
