      Cliche in some situations, such as when you are in love or waging war, you are allowed to be deceitful in order to get what you want.

        The earliest source is from Chaucer in Troilus and Criseyde (AD.1380). But, the saying has a long history in various forms that justifies cheating, or using any means to achieve the wanted end result.
