Two cats that are new to each other should be kept apart. Put one cat in one room and close door. Allow the other cat to roam the house with you and be able to check out the other cat under the door only for several days. You can take turns socializing with each one, but make sure that the other is in another room behind closed door. Give them a few minutes to check each other out after a few days of separation. If all goes well, you can leave both of them out together. If they have a terrible fuss, put one of the cats back in the room and close the door. Allow them to meet each other again for a few minutes only until they will tolerate each other or at least give each other distance when in the same room. This way neither one is going to get scratched or bitten - including you.
