Because we are a sad desperate people pathetically reaching out for even the remotely relevant links to a perceived glorious past.

The monarchists will seethe at my remarks but my wife tried to coax me into attending an upcoming royal visit of Princess Kate and what's his name. I'll do just about anything for her but standing in a crowd of undoubtedly tens of thousands of well wishers is something I WILL NOT take part in. I'd rather sit through an evening at the opera with a knife securely planted in my behind than endure the Royal torture.
