On the bottom right hand side of the screen, just left of where the date and time are, you will find an odd looking icon that is supposed to symbolize a speaker. To be honest with you, the symbol looks more like a drawing of a bowl with steam coming out of it that has been stood on its side. Click on that and it will give you the mute button and your sound level slide.
