Traveling medicine man. He was a sham. There were very few real doctors around (there might actually be only one for a territory) so the scam artist traveling "medicine men" made barrels of money duping people with their cheap cure that contained 51-54% alcohol. Just about anyone was bound to feel better on that stuff, lol
