    how to tell if sender or gas gauge is bad in a boat

    Get an electrical meter and measure the resistance (ohms) of the sender. If the resistance changes as the sender moves up and down (as it would with gas in the tank), the sender is good. As for the fuel gauge, use another wire or something comparable to connect the two wires the go to the gauge - if it moves to completely full or completely empty (movement is the key here), it is working. For the record, it is almost always the sending unit.
