Vehicles Less than 10,000 Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW)
Altering the auxillary fuel system incorrectly can be a violation of federal law.
Federal Motor Vehicle Standards (FMVS) Section 301 states that anyone who alters a vehicle must meet or exceed the structural integrity of the original manufacturer's fuel system. The fuel system includes the tank, gasoline lines, fuel pump, emission canisters and fill-neck. For example, an owner might add an auxiliary system supplying gas to the original tank by gravity feed. If this leaks, it violates FMVSS 301 regulations, the Clean Air Act, and creates a hazardous waste problem.
Gravity Feed Lines From One Tank To Another
Gravity feeding fuel from one tank to another is illegal for most systems.
When an auxiliary system is added to a vehicle powered by gasoline or diesel, the fuel must be drawn through a pipe at the top of the tank. Balance lines or a series of tanks where one tank supplies another are not permitted. Gravity feeding gasoline or diesel fuel from one tank to another ,using a balance line, is illegal for all systems except ICC diesel systems. ICC is the abbreviation for the Interstate Commerce Commission, now known as the Interstate Operating Authority.
