In the AC/DC song it is inspired by Angus Young's (lead guitarist) facial expression. As simple as that!

Figure out yourself the answer. Here are the lyrics:

Well I was out on a drive On a bit of a trip Lookin' for thrills To get me some kicks Now I warn you ladies I shoot from the hip I was born with a stiff Stiff upper lip Like a dog in a howl I bite everything And I'm big and I'm drawl And I'll ball your thing I keep a stiff upper lip And I shoot from the hip I keep a stiff upper lip And I shoot And I shoot Shoot from the hip Yeah I shoot from the hip Now listen Well I'm workin' it out And I've done everything And I can't reform no Can you feel my sting Babe I keep a stiff upper lip And I shoot from the hip, yeah I keep a stiff upper lip And I shoot And I shoot And I shoot shoot shoot Shoot from the hip Well I'm out on the prowl And I'll ball your thing I got the teeth that'll bite you Can you feel my sting Babe I keep a stiff upper lip And I shoot from the hip I keep a stiff upper lip And I shoot shoot shoot from the hip I got a (stiff upper lip) Better believe me (stiff upper lip) Comin' down (stiff upper lip) (Stiff upper lip) Yeah I got a (stiff upper lip) Stiff upper lip Stiff upper lip I got a stiff upper lip I got a stiff upper lip Stiff upper lip Stiff upper lip And I shoot And I shoot And I shoot Shoot from the hip

The phrase 'Stiff upper lip' means making the best of a bad situation, carrying on and basically being 'tough' about something. I have never heard the song so I can't explain that. Hope that helps.

    Thank you.
Do you know where this phrase originated from?

BEING BRITISH-- NOT MAKING A FUSS--KEEPING ONES COOL WHEN ALL AROUND ARE LOSING THEIRS

If you ever notice someone who is whimpering or crying about a situation; their upper lip trembles.
By keeping a "stiff upper lip" they are not showing their opponent any indication of emotion or fear. Shows a brave front.

Always thought the lower lip trembles

    Gossip does great harm.
He'll be surprised to get this response.

Isn't it also a mocking expression for the "upper class english"? Perhaps when a person tries to fake it, he has a stiff upper lip.

At the time of writing this song, AC/DC played some concerts with the Rolling Stones. There is many fotos of Keith Richards having a stiff upper lip when playing guitar. Maybe this songtitel is a friendly grin from AC/DC to Keith. Perhaps. Only few people know.
