It seems to me that not only should the amplitude change but also the effective frequency toward lower frequencies. This is observable in water wave propagation tanks and acoustical atmospheric studies wherein the mixed media of air and water produces ridge propagation delay over the base line. This could lead to adjusting doppler in astrophysics but would not disprove it entirely.
