If I understand you correctly (and yes, it is difficult), the same engine from an earlier year car will theoretically fit in a newer model. Some of the connections may be slightly different, but yes it can be made to work.
However - it depends on where you live. In many states/areas that have strict emission laws/regs, it is illegal to install an engine that is older than the original. Getting caught is unlikely, but could still cause a lot of problems and money.
