I like this method. Roman arches are illustrated to build arches that way...but the facts vary much more. Domed ceilings in very large buildings were built by filling the interior space with earth when constructing the walls and support columns up to and including the ceiling.
Cement was produced in Roman times and salt water used to produce the cement. This slows curing and increases strength. Many structures were constructed this way and frequently watered for up to three years before removing the supporting earth inside the chambers. This timely delay for long enduring concrete is used today. We have fast curing concrete, but it is weak and needs time to cure.
