Because you are using igoogle which has gmail etc. and you may have different apps on the page. If you just want google then sign in to: http://www.google.com/ Then if you want to sign in for mail or whatever else you have on igoogle just click on the sign in button in the right hand corner or click on the little sprocket and click on igoogle. If you want to stay signed in you can try checking the button, but you might need to delete all your google cookies and save them over again to have it save your password for you.
