If I were one of your guests, I wouldn't mind. I never know what to get people anyway and giving money is always easiest for me. I do not know the proper etiquette for weddings and gifts though so I can only give my opinion that others should be like me and give only what you really need.

Padre, I think it's a cultural issue. Some are more sensitive to what they consider to be proper etiquette than others. It isn't a question of one being better than another. There simply ARE differences. In the end, what you choose to do should be based on what cultural group the majority of your guests belong to.

I say this because I suspect that, judging by your name, you may be of European extraction. If that is the case, and more importantly, if your guests are too, they would likely take exception to your request.Besides, Europeans typically always give money instead of toasters. You'll get bigger donations if you don't ask for the cash. It would be considered insulting and unbecoming.

If, however, your guests are mostly North American, I believe that anything goes. You may as well ask for dough unless you want to haul it all to your final destination and hold a giant garage sale.
