I believe the 5.0 is a small eight cylinder and the 4.3 is a large six cylinder. The 4.3 is a good engine (Vortec), which is fairly economical. I had it in a 4-speed manual pick-up truck, and it was good on gas, unless you were hauling something heavy, or a heavy trailer. I have a 5.0 in a Tahoe, and that seems to be a gas guzzler. A lot of what is said about the 4.3 is probably based upon how hard you work it. If its just normal driving I'd go with the 4.3 for economy. Weight of the vehicle these engines are in is also something you might want to consider.
