Very carefully, take off only the end 1/4 of an inch, or up to where the white ends if you can see any (the white is the new growth). Dogs with dark colored nails you can't see where the growth stops and the quick (just like our nails) starts. So be sure to cut only about 1/4 in an inch off or the nails may bleed. This is not deadly, it's like cutting our nails too short and they bleed, it's uncomfortable because they have to walk on their toes and they may be sore.
If you cut them regularly, every 3-4 weeks and cut the same amount each time you will keep the dog more comfortable.
If the dog has really long nails and this is the first time you want to cut the nails, let a veternarian do it and then you can trim on a regular basis after that.
