Because the environmentalists say we cant. The political tail waggers that stand on the corners with the signs get the attention. Clearly they have nothing else to do but complain while the rest of us work and they get their 'special interest' money to do it. We have enough oil under our feet to take care of us for the next 500 years based on current US usage, but seriously, I would think that within the next 50 years there will be a readily available replacement for oil.. Which is another reason why no investors want to invest in drilling because it will not be cost effective over the long run. The billions invested in equipment and man hours for a short run of production. If we would have done this 25 years ago we would not be in this mess today, even 10 years ago..
