I will simply call this as a equation problem rather then finding the magic number.
Proceed as follows:
1. First assume your magic number by any variable, suppose "x"
2. Then, Compute the equation as per the given condition and solve to get the result.
Solution to your problem,
1. let the magic number be "x"
2. Then, 1/7 of magic number is x / 7
3. Then adding above, we get : x + x / 7, which is equal to 8x / 7
By question, the sum is 24
so, 8x / 7 = 24
Therefore, x = 21
Hence your magic number is 21.
