Depends on the brand but be warned replace the cartridge not just try to refill, danger looms in the form of drying up and glugging up the works. Glugging, don`t you just love that word.

On my Epson all I do is hit stop button on macine when prompted that ink required then open top by lifting and the empty cartridge is lined up with indicator mark. Remove the offending cartridge by squeezing the clip at the rear, obtain new cartridge remove protective tabs as indicated and place in position, push down until it clicks. Good luck.

open the printer door and determine what your cartridges are and follow directions to do the job.

I use refill cartridges on my Lexmark printer and never had any trouble with them..a lot cheaper too.
