The city and state where you live has a place to apply for reduced public transportation for the elderly, disabled and low-income.
Here in Chicago if you are 62 for a female, 65 for a male or disabled you can contact CTA (Chicago Transit Authority) and they'll give you a form to fill out, then you go to the office that they direct you to and you'll get your photo taken for a special ID that you give the drivers when you board the bus and you will receive the reduced fare. However, they are now stopping the reduced fare for the elderly unless they meet some low income guidelines as CTA is hurting for money apparently. I'm sure each municipality differs in this.
It all depends on the policies enacted by the governing authorities. Some cities say anyone over 55 years of age, some others will tell U that 62 y.o. is the magic #. U just have to call and ask them about this. Good Luck!
