Click on the mark that opens everything but the internet... probably bottom left. Go the Accesseries... then system tools... if that doesn't lead you to sound control one of the other headings listed will.
It is even worth checking the icons bottome left. One might lead you straight to the sound control.
Explore... and when you find it move the arrow from mute to the volume you want and click OK
