There is a electronic switch above you brake pedal that senses when it is pushed, that's how it was in the old cars and still probably with the new.
All you have to do is get a flashlight look just above your brake pedal and you should see a switch, that's the part that will sometimes stick, you probably just need a new one. You may be able to mess with the switch to get it to turn off temporarily, until you replace it. Hope this helps...
