The original Benji was a shelter dog from Burbank, California and was a mixed breed. When news hit that this dog was a shelter dog then many more dogs began to be adopted from shelters. The 3rd dog for the 4th movie was also adopted from a shelter after having been abandoned on a country road and he/she I think) was also a mixed breed.
