Does anyone know the role of white Quartz stone in Celtic/Gaelic culture?

I have noticed White Stones built into the entrances of some old hpouse in The North of Scotland. i also noticed that many old -and not so old Welsh Houses and Farms have similar Stones on their gateposts.
I have also found small quartz pebbles associated with Bronze and Iron age structures in Orkney. I know that celtic Christians used white Stones in some way.
I am wondering if anyone knows of any literature that would throw a bit more light on this.

An ancient Celtic practice, said to restore and maintain health, was to place nine small Quartz crystals in water, boil it, cool it, and then drink the enhanced water for nine consecutive days.
