Years ago when I was attending a Catholic school (1960's), it was a fellow student who was assigned to tell on you if you were caught not following the prescribed rules. The end result would often be some Nun slapping the backs of your hands across the knuckles with a wooden or metal ruler in a coat closet. In looking back, I can only say that a hall monitor was usually a brainwashed kid used to take the joy of simply being a kid in a system that dealt out corporal punishment for simple infractions like talking in line, or chewing gum.
