You could try plugging your ears with your fingers and start humming. Maybe they will get the point.

I have found that so often there is much to be learned from the old stories of what people have experienced. Maybe you could ask them what they learned from that experience or try to find something in the story that is applicable and talk about that rahter than the actual story and it may be less boring that way! Getting involved helps aleviate (sp?) the yawns!!
