A stranded conductor is more flexible than a solid. It is also cheaper to produce. That goes for any type cable. The application of a stranded Category cable is strictly for patch cords, which are typically short in length and work better when flexible. Solid conductor Category cables are used for longer distances and are usually hidden behind walls or ceilings. The performance of solid conductor cables are also superior than stranded although this advantage is meaningless for short "patch cord" cables.
