Some things you may want to check:
(1) Is the cylinder the holds the dirt full?
(2) Have you checked to see if the part that rolls over the carpet is clean and free of threads etc.
(3) Do you smell any sense of anything burning?
I have had my Dyson for several years without problems. However, it does require cleaning maintenance as do all vacuums.
