I think they can. They might become very stressed out and this can cause them to neglect their health, diet, etc. I've heard of many couples who have been together for years and when one of them dies the other one often follows suit shortly thereafter, for example.

I don't know about people but a friend of mine years ago had a German Shepard, my friend joined the military and the dog just quit eating, his mom asked me to come by and see if i could get her to eat but she just pouted until she died, I wished they had taken her to a vet.. She died of a broken heart.. :(

Yes, I read on the google health site some time ago that it was possible to die from heartbreak.
