A surge protector only prevents surges of electricity from ruining your electrical equipment. It still should be turned off at the switch.
I turn everything off before I go shopping.

yes, i have a surge protector, vetran.
    thanks you guys
Your home should be grounded... If lighting were to strike your home (electrical system) it should be fed out to the ground rod. No we do not unplug.. But my hubby wont let me get a bath.
In the past this was true. But now U can buy a surge protector and this will take care of it.
A recent storm took out phones in my area after a lightning strike on the line.
My broad-band modem was zapped so I made enquiries about a surge protector for the phone line that could be reset. It appears that a resettable protector does not exist, but if anyone knows of one, please post details.
