How old are you? If you are an adult start with a gas card. Some banks will let you open an account with a self proclaimed credit limit. This is how I started mine many years ago-- this means that you deposit like 500 and this will be your credit limit, if you make your payments you are ok, miss one and they will automatically withdraw the payment from this account, however, if they do, it will hurt your credit standing, after you prove yourself, they will raise your limit over your deposit and you can close that account. (This is a special account and as long as there's a balance on your card, you can not withdraw from it)
