Polycythemia vera or PV, is a rare blood disease in which your body makes too many red blood cells.
PV is mainly characterized by an increase in RBC mass, leading to hyperviscosity of the blood. Increases in WBC and platelet counts are also common, as is bone marrow hyperplasia, which is typically erythroid in nature. PV affects men slightly more often than women, and the average age of diagnosis is between 60 to 65 years.
