    when using a gas grill are lava rocks necessary?

    Not necessary, but they do help the heat to be more evenly distributed. Instead of having cold spots or hot spots on your grill, it evens it out somewhat, it also hold heat so once you heat up your grill the rocks will hold heat, helping you use less propane. Also when the juices drip it helps prevent the meat from catching on fire, being that the meat isn't exposed to direct flame.

    They also sell a metal box you can put wood chips in to add a smokey flavor to your gas grill cooked food. They sell them at propane stores or stores that specialize in gas grills. Good luck with the grill, hope this helps.
    If you mean like in a barbecue grill then no, rocks aren't necessary
