      The best way to come up with a honest answer about what he would like to study is to pick something he is passionate about, something he really loves and the he can write a statement to the university that will ring true to them when they read it.

        His 'favorite' English teacher usually helps former students--or,better, his senior English teacher will. They do this kind of thing (you know, before and after school and sometimes on weekends--it's what teachers do...). Also, a counselor might help, or know who in his school, has experience with helping students do this. All schools want students to succeed, so he has a good chance of doing well with their help.
