On a clear day how far can you see, if there are no obstructions, such as being on a calm sea, before the curvature of the earth drops the object out of sight?

When I was in the Navy we were told that on a clear day from the fantail of my ship (15 feet off the water) the end of the horizon was 17 miles away. This was due to the curvature of the earth.
Of course, the higher you got the further you could see (Bridge).
