It would seem rather silly to go from July 3rd to July 5th. Then I suppose we'd have to have a July 32.
if you're asking when, it's Monday, July 4, 2011. If you're asking why we celebrate it, it's America's Independence Day from the British Empire.
Add to Gary's reply: And independence from the rule of the Church of England.
The 4th of july was celebrated because of the day we found independence from England or, rather, the British Empire. A flag was created to commemorate the sovereignty and a song was struck to ring the cords of the hearts of them who remember what it meant: The American Revolution, the 13 original colonies broke off from Great Britain, year later, flag was created.

What it represents is America's birthday.
